Unlock PDF removes password protection or permission restrictions from PDFs you own or are allowed to edit. The target case is a legitimate document that blocks printing, copying or editing when you need a workable copy.
Some PDFs have an open password, which prevents the file from opening until the password is entered. Others have permission restrictions that allow viewing but block actions such as printing or copying. If the file has an open password, you need to provide the correct password before it can be unlocked.
Use Unlock PDF for documents you created, files your organization owns or documents where you have clear permission to make changes. Do not use it to bypass restrictions on files you are not allowed to modify.
The goal is to create a copy without the restriction layer while keeping the visible document the same. The pages, images and text should remain in place. If the source file is damaged or uses unusual encryption, unlocking may fail and you may need a clean copy from the sender.
Open the output and check that the document behaves as expected. You can then edit metadata, compress the file, merge it with another PDF or convert it to another format. If you need to share a restricted copy again, use Protect PDF with a fresh password.
Unlock PDF uses server side PDF processing; uploads and outputs are deleted automatically once the 10 minute cleanup window passes. PDFem does not keep a permanent copy of the unlocked file.
